Opinions of Dentistry Students on Distance Education in the Period of Covid-19

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the views of undergraduate students studying distance education at Atatürk University Faculty of Dentistry in the 2020/2021 academic term about distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 23 questions was applied to 463 students studying in grades 1-5. The survey questions consist of questions about the functioning of the distance education system, the comparison of distance education with face-to-face education, the effect of distance education on clinical life, and the comparison of online and face-to-face exams. Of the 463 participants in the study, 59.8% (277) were female and 40.2% (186) were male. According to the education period of the students; 1st grades accounted for 26.6% (123) of this study, 2nd grades 19.4% (90), 3rd grades 22.5% (104), 4th grades 21% (97), and 5th grades It constitutes 10.5% (49) of them. Results: When comparing the classes, there was no statistically significant difference between the 5 classes in terms of the total scores obtained from the questionnaire (p=0.141). However, when the genders are compared, there is a statistically significant difference in terms of the total survey score (p=0.005). The average of the total survey score of all questions is 57.2±12.3. While the total score from the questionnaire is 92 at the highest, it is at least 30. Conclusion: When students adaptation to distance education is evaluated, the choice of online exam rather than face-to-face especially in the application of exams draws attention. In addition, in the section where the effect of distance education on clinical life was examined, statistically significant differences were found between classes.
